BREATHEWATCHLISTENTOUCH: The Work and Music of Yoko Ono

On March 22nd, Lauren Ruth Ward took part in the exceptional evening at Walt Disney Concert Hall celebrating the artist, Yoko Ono. Both Ono’s art and music was performed by an ensemble of special guests in a concert-length celebration of her sixty-plus-year career. Yoko Ono was a special guest of the evening.

Line-up: Amber Coffman, Shruti Kumar, La Marisoul, Madame Gandhi, Shirley Manson, Nina McNeely, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Francisca Valenzuela, We Are KING. This time Lauren was more in the background, along with Girlschool LA choir, but I bet it was an incredible experience!

Yoko Ono is one of the most influential artistic figures of the 20th century. Her works as both a performance artist and a musician have not only helped to shape both media in the ensuing years, but have also had wider reverberations in society at large.

Her work is conceptually bold and politically confrontational, but it’s delivered to her audience with a lyrical touch – one informed by her dedication to peace and spirituality – giving it a great sense of warmth and humanity.

BREATHEWATCHLISTENTOUCH takes its name from Ono’s Dance Piece X, a Fluxus score that commands the performer to “Breathe; Watch; Listen; Touch and move between the Earth and the Sky.”

Produced by LA Phil in partnership with Girlschool LA (founded by Anna Bulbrook in 2016, Girlschool is a music festival and creative community with a mission: to celebrate, connect, and lift women-identified artists, leaders, and voices). This was the LA Phil’s first collaboration with Girlschool.
